The Edge, July 1998, Page 44 NOW, THAT'S SYNCHRONICITY!A funny thing happened on the way to Whole Life Expo... We have all heard about synchronicity, but when it happens to us, we always marvel at how events take place. I was scheduled to speak on my book at Whole Life Expo in St. Paul. I had arrived in the afternoon, checked into my hotel and proceeded to get ready for my talk that evening. I decided to walk to the RiverCentre, because the sun was still shining and the day still looked marvelous. I asked for directions to the expo center, but the directions I was given took me the opposite way from where I wanted to go. After walking approximately six blocks, I didn't see anything that looked remotely like a convention center. My intuition kept nudging me to ask for assistance. I stood at the end of the block and contemplated what direction I would walk next when suddenly a lady and her daughter walked up behind me. I turned and asked if they knew where the Twin City Expo Center was, they replied that they didn't know. (I later found out I was asking for something that didn't exist). They suggested that we walk to the Children's Museum across the street for directions. When I asked for information on how to get to the center a fellow at the museum said he only knew of the RiverCentre, which he thought was about two blocks from where we were. I thought, "Great, I can easily walk there," but my new companions insisted that I let them give me a ride. We walked back across the street to a brand new four-wheel drive, which was parked right at the end of the corner. The automobile was so new that even the plastic coverings had not been removed from the rear seats or the carpet. Off we went to the RiverCentre which as more correctly about 10 blocks rather than two, and all the while I am thinking this is definitely opulent synchronicity. Angels in disguise After I was dropped off at the entrance, it dawned on me that the mother and daughter had walked across the street with me to the museum expressly to get directions so that they could give me a lift. The two women truly were angels in disguise; their generosity and selflessness touched me so tremendously that I had to choke back a grateful tear. I went into my lecture so energized that my audience didn't have a clue what hit them. I talk a lot about synchronicity in my lectures and this just reinforced my thinking that when we open our hearts there is an intelligence that speaks to us through all of us. St. Augustine once wrote, "Miracles happen not in opposition to Nature, but in opposition to what we know of Nature." Our ancient teachers knew that nature constantly supports us and we can can trust it. We can either view the world as a safe and abundant place or a dangerous place that we need to fear. Whatever we decide, that is the possibility we give our energy to, which in turn determines our reality. Attention on what we want creates the experiences that we will have; it activates the infinite organizing power of Nature to bring us the fulfillment of all our desires. I think we have to remember that we do not put anything into Nature. Instead, we take from Nature a power that already exists, which is inherently ours to use. Many individuals believe the statement, "Let the universe handle the details," implies that they don't have to make choices, or think about what they want in life when, in fact, nothing could be further from the truth! It means that you must first choose what you want, without concerning yourself about how it will take place. You could receive support from the most unexpected sources, so don't block your good by intellectualizing how the events will work themselves out. You might miss important clues! You will find, as I did, that other will be automatically attracted to help you. We are connected to the source of all of the past; the awareness and knowing that holds the wisdom of the past; the awareness and knowing of the present moment; the vision of the future. And it lies within each and every one of us. The ancients called this intelligence or consciousness the "Spirit or Self"; it is our true essence and its powers are limitless. It never sleeps, it warns of impending danger and guides us to action in what we may perceive as miracles; it is the most formidable force in shaping and controlling our lives. To look within It not only is the source of power for all of us and our actions; it is the source of all our thoughts. When we align with this deepest level of life then we can have whatever we put our attention on. Intuition, inspiration, innovation, insight, intention and integrity all start within and all are the higher functions of this creative intelligence. In fact, intuition is derived from the Latin term intueri meaning "to look within" and intuition is the way our higher power catches our attention to give us "knowing" on what action to take. When you become conscious of how you are an individual expression of this Universal Intelligence, you will gain tremendous power to achieve your dreams spontaneously. It may be silent, but it is a real force -- a force that has been ignored because of a lack of understanding.
There is tremendous power in your focused thought; tremendous power in the present moment to create synchronicity and to create that which seems impossible. That beautiful day in St. Paul proved to me again that the universe will roll in ecstasy at my feet, it has no choice! Listen to your inner wisdom -- it is your secret power.
